In Russian only proper names are capitalized such as names of people, cities, countries, rivers, mountains etc. And common names are not capitalized. The names of the nations and languages is proper names in English but common names in Russian. That's why in Russian they are not capitalized and why Russians make this mistake. But common names can be used as proper names and then they can be capitalized.
