Closer to Mexican border. It's some Chula Vista and below. I don't think they are really ghettos. People there have cars and drive to work everywhere. It's just a bit more rundown and shady. I actually drove once to the border thinking I can magically renew my expired H1b work visa in US consulate on Mexico side. Walked a few stairs flights on the border bridge being looked at very weirdly like what the heck is he doing, then turned back actually realizing that I can stuck there. There was no border US patrol but many cameras for outgoing traffic.

That's how relaxed and easygoing I was at the time and place.
