"Typical American woman"

I don't know how foreigners perceive the "typical American woman." However, three times this week, I have been called this.

Stereotypes - they are very damaging in many cases, and must be quashed. We are all influenced by stereotypes on some level, but I really try to erase them from memory when traveling, forming impressions based only on pure experience. Most recently, I can say it about Georgia - where everyone warned me about all kinds of things, when in reality I encountered almost none of the horrors mentioned. In the end, we are responsible for the company we keep. You have the choice to surround yourself with good, positive and uplifting...or, you can run wild with the animals in the zoo.

Most people using this phrase - "typical American woman" have never even met, or had any real experience with an American woman. Therein lies the problem...that is all I really want to say for today. :)

I do not find this topic amusing, in fact it makes me very sad that some young girls are raised this way. Good man - this is a treasure, all welcome it...but there is more to life than this. :)

Do you love Georgia more then Russia?

[identity profile] peacetraveler22.livejournal.com 2016-12-15 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
They are just completely different on many levels. But, yes, I like Georgia better than Russia from a travel/adventure perspective.

An average American family has more kids than an average Russian family, btw.

Yeah, US is so different in different parts of it. Who is the typical American, I ask? A Yappy from the Manhattan? Yankee from the New Hampshire? Iowan with roots in the Holland? Californian from the Pacific islands? It all stupid generalizations....

I like this kind of American women. If an American woman doesn't look like this, she's not American but a foreigner.

Glad to hear that this Georgia trip of yours went well.

They're lovely! I suppose it's an added bonus if they also feed you grapes? :)

It was a great adventure! I already wrote several reports about the expedition. More to follow...

"American Woman" is written by the Canadian rock band The Guess Who in January 1970. Lenny Kravitz is Afro-Ukrainian as they want us to believe but a Jew in actuality.

Exactly! Succinctly said. :)

Unfortunately, you're right.

All American women I met were easy-going in communication and more vivid than Russians. Is it a stereotype?:))

I guess the word "American" doesn't matter much in that construction. People who say "All the **** are like that" never met all the people they're talking about. There is no research in the world that would be able to evaluate the behavior of the whole group (women, gay people, Americans, meat lovers, nurses) Some people understand that, but others only feel safe when they're sure about smth, and new information makes thev totally unhappy, because in this case they have to think a lot, which is very annoying=)

a typical American woman (from the city) for me would be like Lorelai from Gilmore Girls: loves to eat, loves to drink alcohol, opinionated, kind of broke, has sex whenever she wants to, likes to "have fun". Has a job, but not very passionate about it.

That's right! Perfect observation. Some don't like to flex their brain too often, requires too much time and effort.

You've just ruined my workday! Now I will be either reading your Georgian reports or dreaming about doing it. Instead of working :)

[identity profile] sasha-severny.livejournal.com 2016-12-15 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a lie. Being a foreigner you simply didn't get that those nice American women were self-sufficient and bitches least of all.

I am always amazed at these ability to stay positive. I think 80% of people are either good actors or take antidepressants to stay positive, it can't be for real :)

Besides, being tolerant and curious means being brave enough to admit the fact that we are all different, which is soooooo scary=)))
So, I just pity the guys. It's ok, they're too scared to get that I'm a blondy who can fix her computer by herself. Ok, I can't. My husband did that while I was making dinner. Now everyone's happy (nevermind we did it on the opposite)
=))
