They are hypocritical in a way that they concentrate more on what they _should_ be according to the scriptures, not on the reality, it's true.
But conversely :) they are more realistic in a part that they concentrate on the most substantial issue of life: death and how to avoid it. It really puzzles me how most of us, not religious, tend to forget about death and just read books, travel, etc. We collect all those impressions in our heads but eventually (if you do not believe in eternal life) they all will be lost. So in fact this all is meaningless activity no matter if you are "simply moving through the daily motions" or doing something more for yourself.
In the perspective of death the only meaningful options to my opinion are: fighting death (in religious way or another) and doing things mostly not for yourself but for something bigger: your nation, civilization, etc.
