Partly from propaganda, partly from lack of information. All media in the Soviet Union have no idea what fact checking is. In the US you have "yellow newspapers" but in the former USSR all newspapers are yellow. That's why people are so poorly informed.
After collapse of the Soviet Union the propaganda was no more government sponsored, yet a lot of people including journalists continued to spread false information about life in EU/US. It's hard to understand, why, I can think about the following explanation: you can be jailed in the Soviet Union if you openly express sympathy to the West. Even among "friends" there were "stukach" who informed security of all the conversations. That's why after 1990 many people unconsciously continued spreading bullshit about life in the US.
