566165664

At my school, there was no cafeteria. Each morning, my mom awoke early and packed lunch for my sister and me. It grew monotonous, eating the same sandwiches and fruit each day. Secretly, I dreamed of being like my friends who went to public schools, lining up each day to have some old woman with a net around her hair throw slop on my plate. In the U.S., there's constant debate over what school children are fed in the cafeteria. A lot of schools have removed snack and soda machines, and guidelines about nutritional values for school meals are always shifting. Over the weekend, I looked at the menu from my nephew's elementary school, listing the meal choices for each day in the month of May. Common choices include pizza, tacos, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken nuggets and pastas, all served with some type of vegetable and potatoes or rice. There's always one healthy option like grilled chicken or fish, and a wide-variety of fresh fruit is available for purchase. Yet only the most disciplined of children would pick such options when there are tastier and more indulgent choices placed in front of them each day. All of this creates a very sad picture on the white tray. I grew curious, and began to read about school lunches around the globe, and here's what I discovered!

Look at the culinary delights thrown on these plates from Brazil, Greece and France. The Greek dish looks especially appetizing to me, while the plate from Ukraine has the same sad and pathetic appearance as the USA lunch, filled with greasy sausages, potatoes, cabbage, borscht and a pancake.

If the topic is of interest to readers, I can take my camera and join my nephew for lunch one day to explain more about what school kids in the USA eat. Of course, many parents still pack lunches for their children, so they aren't forced to eat this cafeteria slop each day. However, I think there's some level of excitement for most young kids to go through the cafeteria line each day, pick from a choice of foods, and create their own meals. It's a rite of passage for almost all American school children.

What did you eat during your school days? Cafeteria food, or homemade lunches? I have no idea what Russian children are served in cafeterias or dining halls, because I've never once visited a school there. Has it changed a lot from the Soviet era? What happens if the family has no money to pay for a child's lunch, does the Russian government subsidize it?

:)) And cafe chairs are very small. Not made for an "American-sized" butt. :))

У нашому разi це був россiйськомовний домашний садочок для дiточок с 3 мiсяцив до 3 рокiв) батьки дають свою iжу дитинi, а в школи iжу привозять с компанii, яка змогла виграти тендер и яка вiдповiдаэ всiм умовам.

Off: Якщо дiйдуть руки. Кажучi вiдверто, я перестала писати в блозi. :) Спробую створити голубцi зi стейком i барбекю соусом.

"Cheese zombie..." :)) The food looks edible!

very tasty!

Right you are! Like airplain chairs too.
I for one think that this is the early romance of America with cars that brought a spesific body pattern to female trunk. There is no what French call "la taille". It`s just a wide and large truncated pole, what Russians call "koloda", Russian women who for the 90% didn`t have cars and had to deal with public transport or walk with large houshold bags grew fat differently - on the belly mostly, not on their sides.
And then America started to eat huge portions and drink sweet pop-soda-drinks...

Never knew this a law to stop in Canada.
But I believed the guests must show the documents to Canadian custom officers. Turned out it is free access in spite in Skagwau you must show them if you cross Canadian border even shortly on the excursion train. No logic at all.

Agree

I think in Ukraine they have pretty same boring shit as in Russia, maybe only with some cured pork fat added... Things on your picture look more Polish or Czech to me.

I guess Putin want to put together capitalism, soviet empire and dictatorship instead of rule of law.

I can't imagine that a Russian or Ukrainian school would ever serve tacos!! :)) It's the one thing I noticed during my visits to Russia. Very few Mexican restaurants and in the USA they are everywhere! I like this type of food a lot, but not with beef, chicken instead.

I had cafeteria food without any choice. Sometimes it was awful, sometimes edible.
My daughter once had great problem after school lunch (it's obligatory her - we cannot give a lunch box - we need to pay for common cafeteria) with her stomach. I even brought her to a hospital to treat her... She was ill after that. The food was very fat... And once, half of year we could have a choice and she did it in favour of vegetarian food - just not to eat that fatty food - it's a pity it was a half of year only...

Why? :)) I'm American! English is my native language.

Oh, I strongly dislike fatty meats! They also make me sick.

Yep, cheese zombie is good :)

It's also good against thirst after eating salted food.

I wrongly said. Students eat not this

You have a child in school? What does he or she eat?

[identity profile] elena-88888.livejournal.com 2015-05-26 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I remember her explanations there weren't pieces of meat (or almost weren't) - there was just fatty buckwheat or other hot cereals or mashed potatoes...
