and 40 years ago the majority of americans thought jews had horns and tails. well, not quite, but antisemitism was both cultural and institutional, as was homophobia. the society has made an enormous leap in only 50 years.
Shannon likely has irish roots. i remember ( do you?) stories of irish americans denied entry - to country clubs, but even to Lions and other service groups, like Kianis, Rotary, Shriners, to universities, to medical schools. irish were the "white blacks", in the eastern establishment ( the west was kinder and myopic to origin in comparison) - and so were italians, portugese, not to speak of orientals and latinos ( again, the deep west was different) - and it took decades to lift the WASP dominance in all areas of public life and in industry. DECADES.
so.. the women already managed to win all possible rights they were missing. now, it looks like the gay battle is over as well.
time to stop demonstrating parading and celebrating, and get to work.
