I believe your family and many others do cook their own food here but compared to Russia it's not as prevalent. Most Americans prefer to use "ready-made" things. Take pancakes for example: 9 out 10 times they will be made out of box. I've never seen anyone here making real pancakes from scratch using milk, eggs and flour. How about soups? 9 times out of ten the soup will come out of a can. Pizza or turnovers? (my favorite is the apple kind) You pick up a frozen box of pre-made stuff at a grocery store, pop it in the oven - done. No fresh ingredients needed. When one of my (American) friends once made cupcakes from scratch she made sure everyone knew about it and that fact received a lot of attention from everyone at the party.
That's what I mean by Americans eating a lot of "plastic" food these days. Everything is ready to go and if you are curious what it's made of - just look at the label, all the chemicals are listed there.
