Explain Crimea...

match

I don't understand why there is blackness in Crimea. What's going on? Is this some political game being played or really a problem with infrastructure? Meanwhile, I read the pro-Kremlin blog of Russian patriot [livejournal.com profile] politichanka, who is very friendly even though we have completely different political views. I read her blog, and sometimes communicate with her. She's upset the TV news remains silent about the difficult situation in Crimea...focusing only on Erdogan, Syria, Bandera, Nazis...enemies all around, instead of discussing problems within. I saw some photos in other posts where Crimean children are gathered in public places where a TV is placed, and they too are staring at the face of Putin on the news rather than watching cartoons or other child friendly programming. Meanwhile, I haven't seen this situation covered at all on major U.S. news channels. As usual, we are focused on problems within - yet another shooting in Colorado from what appears to be a religious, right wing wacko opposed to abortion. So many of these religious conservatives are opposed to immigrants or refugees, failing to recognize that extremism comes in all forms, including from their beloved brethren.

What's really happening in Crimea? Help me understand.

Well, this part I understand. :) But what is end objective of all of this fighting? The purpose? To keep grabbing more territory of Ukraine for strategic military reasons, or something else? And how can a lot of Russians believe that Putin doesn't provide support and aid to the separatists? Who else provides the equipment and finances to keep the battle going? Certainly not the U.S., who openly supports Ukraine in the conflict.

Dear Shannon, I also do not know answers))) As for me Putin is mad. He fights with every neighbors from Baltic sea to Mediterranean Sea. Russians leave in sweat dreams. In those dreams Russia is a great powerful country, and Putin is wise leader. Everybody in the rest of the world wants to destroy Russia . That the only my explanation.

I am deeply convinced that Nemtsov was right denouncing Putin's 'insane'.

Changing the government in Ukraine the USA and NATO planned to change conditions of the contract, in that case Russia will lose the entrance to Black Sea and NATO base will be located in Crimea.
Russian fleet was located in Crimea, is located now and it will be located untill russians are alive.
It is a question of safety our borders. We don't need NATO bases around Russia.

There are many purposes.

When it comes to Crimea:
Keep Black Sea Fleet naval base in Sevastopol (it was on the lease, to be expired sooner or later, Russia even started some lazy preparations to build a new base in Novorossiysk on the Russian part of Black Sea coast). Also Crimea to be used as an "unsinkable aircraft carrier", giving Russian tactical aircraft greater reach over Black Sea (there are military air bases on the most southern "tip" of the peninsula, where Russian fleet air arm was present and trained Navy pilots for carrier landings many years before the conflict).
Loot expensive resort land and property to the pockets of Putin's friends.
Boost Putin's approval rating in the country despite growing economical issues (which had started and were deemed to get worse even before the conflict and sanctions that followed).
Deny Ukraine entry to NATO. Coutries having border disputes can not apply, so here's your dispute.

When it comes to Donbass:
- Cripple Ukrainian economy (questionable, some people claim that Donbass was budgetary deficiend region due to its coal industry being donated to keep jobs despite negative profit).
- Loot Donbass military industry (some Ukrainian-made components are crucial for some Russian-produced military technology).
- Waste belligerent and energetic adventurers from Russian population - let them go to Donbass to fight and be killed by Ukrainian army or internal struggles between various armed groups there. Also: Hope for collapse of Ukrainian state and overthrow of current government due to burden of war in Donbass. (should be noted that Crimea was taken by regular Russian Army forces, not "hybrid war" rag-tag militia. It's because Crimea was needed intact, but Donbass with lesser chance to succesfully annex it was assigned a role of meat-grinder both for Ukraine and dangerous Russian elements).
- Probe possible reaction of the international community about Russian annexation of Donbass and Zaporozhye to achieve connection with Crimea by land.
