As a child, i had to heat the stove, because the parents were returning late, i was home before them. The warm oven usually was used for drying shoes, so before heating the stove the shoes had to be removed from it. Several times i forgot to do it, then soles began to melt and the whole house smelled of burnt rubber. For some reason, father never punished me for spoiled shoes, although i have often been whipped with a belt because of bad grades in school.
