Resting bitch face

bitch

Today I was reminded of a unique phenomenon we call "resting bitch face" in English. I'm not sure if this expression is used in Russian, but it refers to people (mostly women) who always have an angry, annoyed or irritated expression on their face. The expression does not always correlate with the emotions of the particular moment, and there have been some psychological and physiological studies to determine whether resting bitch face is genetically inherent, or whether it's a true reflection of a person's mood or personality. There has been no conclusive answer. :) Normally, I'm a very cheerful, smiley person but lately it seems I probably have this resting bitch face expression too often. Do you know women, or men, who always have this look of displeasure or irritation on their face? There are several female celebrities who have notably been diagnosed as having resting bitch face - Kristen Stewart, Anna Kendrick, Victoria Beckham. Just look at photos of them online, and you will see it's true! Personally, I could never date or constantly be around someone who always looks like a sour puss! :)) A nice smile is immediately inviting, while a look like this screams "stay away!"

I know some people tell me gender relations are much better now in Russia, but some of my male readers make me constantly shake my head due to their rudeness and barbaric thinking about a woman's place in the world. :((

Previous set of photos was amazing!
I don't sensitive to the 'sad face' because it's normal for Russian.
And, you know, I saw enough sad faces in USA too. I think It's normal.
From my experience in USA I would rather say that emotions can easily change when you start talking with someone and when your and his/her emotions are on the same wave and your buddy starts smiling - that is the best prize ! :)

By the way : I was shocked that McDonald's in Russia is better than in USA - both in cuisine and service! :)
And thank you for the compliment - I was not sure that I have natural USA's accent when speaking :)

Glad you liked the photos in the other post! I had fun creating them! :) Well, you still had an accent when speaking, but it was not strong and your English pronunciation was excellent. Your friend also spoke good English, but his accent was very, very strong, making it difficult to understand. I had to listen to his message several times to comprehend what he said, and yours I understood instantly. About McDonald's, I really don't eat there or any other fast food place. The only exception is when I'm traveling and my companion doesn't want to stop for a proper meal at a restaurant. In such cases, I'm usually just getting salad or yogurt if it's breakfast time because McDonald's meat is questionable in my view and too fatty and gritty for my liking. I like very lean meats. :)

Well, I'm not sure about my friend but I have an about 5 years of support in English that is why I try to use correct pronunciation :) About Mac - I usually get one hamburger and one cheeseburger - that is enough for me for 4-5 hrs walking. I do not buy any potato or something like that - that would be extra for me, So I'm able to compare - packing is more cheaper in USA. Openness is more likely in Russia. Food is more tasty in Russia too :)

What kind of support? Do you practice with native English speakers?

[identity profile] yacc11.livejournal.com 2016-03-12 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Technical support and quite often I speak with native americans, :) And I can tell you how to find out them - they use idioms! :)

You know, your posts are very clear. I cannot say same about everyday conversations in USA - too many idoms :)
But I know magic key - "I'm sorry, could you please repeat" ... :)

Americans are used to communicating with foreigners and tons of immigrants. Our ears are attuned to all types of accents, so it's rarely a problem to ask us to repeat our words. Common practice in the USA, and I do it also when I can't understand nonnative speakers who now call America home.

I could say with confidence that Live Journal is so because it is pleasant to people. I'm here voluntarily:) If I find something better i would not have been here.

Yes, I'm sad and disappointed in human behaviors yet again. Thanks for the film recommendation.

This is not a recommendation, this is the order! Wearing a the burqa, housework, kitchen, washing dishes, complete subordination to male's power, all of this will heal your sadness !!!

Ha-ha - you have an experience since the childhood! :)
My grandfather told me an joke story of his youth - one russian soldier returns from the World War One and is telling about places he has visited to the family: "Wow! Just imagine! - in Turkey even small boy can speak turkish!" :)))

I noticed that in America faces are not so fixed as in Russia, though they still get more fixed with age, even actors and other celebrities tend to have defined expressions with age, while children faces usually not so rigid and also children laughter is more abandoned. Probably it's a requirement to obtain a mask with age, so everyone chooses the one that fits them better, including celebrities.

"This is a physical and mental condition... " Basically I did not say anything different.
The fact that there is a study (irrespective of the scientific or news value of that type of studies) does not change the concept of stereotyped thinking. Meaning the classification in categories for the purpose of simplification etc.
All that's missing now is some news about a discovery of a new drug on BuzzFeed, sponsored by Lilly, Pfizer and co.

Cheers

Children are more free than adults, innocence is their virtue. Most of them do not yet know or understand the evils of humanity or the world. They aren't burdened with so many complexes and emotions. They see only good first, and nothing else. It's much easier to have a constant pleasant expression on the face in youth. :)
