There were no "prison camps" in 1980. They were in Stalin times.
70s and 80s were pretty vegetarian years unless, of course, you did everyhing yourself to confront the regime.
A harder line might save the Soviet Union ensuring smooth transition like in China.
We had to do the same in 1989 as Chinese government did.

And those "blue and thin" chicken were naturally raised, without hormones, much tastier than 90% of today's poultry.
