It depends on what word you use for a car.
If it is машина (machine) it's feminine.
But if it's автомобиль (automobile) it's masculine.
I think in most cases it depends not on an object but on how the word sounds.
But in English there are also strange cases sometimes.
For example why is a ship referred as "she"?
It's not gender-neutral.
