Remember my post about the Ukrainian market? I wrote there that I love food and my position hasn't changed. In America, we're getting ready to enter the most delicious time of year. We'll celebrate Christmas in less than two weeks. For my family, this means big gatherings and feasts. I can't really say I love Russian food. During my visits I tried some local cuisine, but didn't like most of it. I'm a very picky eater, not liking fish, seafood or a lot of meat. Recently on a popular U.S. website there was an article entitled "17 Bizarre Foods Every Russian Grew Up With." Maybe you'll find it amusing. I picked the most interesting dishes from the list and I've tasted a lot of the items. For me, the most disgusting delicacies are all the food molds stuffed with meats, herring and other treats. Like this photo, where the dish is called "herring under fur coat." :)Read more... )

Hardees001

In the mountains of Wyoming, I came across a young couple in a lodge. Internet reception is very sparse in the region, but in the national park there's a lodge where reception is good and computers are free for use. The couple was sitting beside me at a station, frantically searching the Internet for a Hardee's location in the area. It was a serious discussion, trying to figure out where this hamburger joint was located. They even got into a heated argument over how to get there, how long it would take, etc. It was as though they were calculating the driving route to a pot of gold, when in fact this is an ordinary American fast food restaurant.

I became curious and asked the guy why they were on a quest to find a Hardee's. After all, there's tons of restaurants in the area where you can get a much better hamburger, but at a higher price. He explained the couple had been camping and hiking in the national parks of the West for the past two months, living on very little calories each day due to limited finances. So this crappy burger to them would be a real treat and delicacy. Amazing the simple things that please people.Read more... )

I love food. I've never understood people who forget to eat or get no pleasure from it. But I'm a very picky eater and this sometimes presents challenges when traveling. On most weekdays, my diet consists of chicken, rice and vegetables. I love carrots and my refrigerator is usually stocked with several bags of them. This is shocking to some guests, to open the door and see a sea of orange and not much else. I don't like any seafood and most meats, but will never refuse a sweet, cheese or any type of pasta.

During my recent trip to Uki Village in Chicago, I came across this Ukrainian market. So let's go inside and see what I found.Read more... )
