Please replace the word "MOVIE" with "FORUM", and by forum I mean the internet as a whole, and specifically LJ. Over the weekend, some self-loathing troll decided to invade my blog and leave all kinds of misogynistic comments, all written as "anonymous." I've never censored any type of criticism toward me here - people have openly insulted my looks, clothes, mentality, life choices, etc., and I tolerate it for two reasons: (1) people are entitled to their opinions; and (2) freedom of expression is the only way to have open and productive discussions, facilitate changes in mentality, and progress societies as a whole. But I will no longer permit blatant misogyny here, directed toward all women in general.

All anonymous comments are now banned. I previously allowed them, but only after I screened them first. I don't have time to weed through dozens of sexist comments to find a diamond in the rough. If you wish to communicate with me, you will have to register as an LJ user to leave comments moving forward. Of all the comments left the past few days, nothing infuriates me more than the following:

"You will never find a man because you're outdated."

Did you know women have expiration dates, just like dairy products or the slabs of meat in your market?

This is news to me, and the mentality is disgusting, yet still pervasive in your culture. Not only with finger-happy trolls who go wild with the keys and spit virtual bile, but society in general. And how exactly is this expiration date determined? When you can no longer give birth? If so, then the age should be shifted upward, because women now have babies well into their 40's, including members of my family.

I now begin to understand more and more why I'm considered by some readers to be a radical feminist. Because, in essence, feminism is the radical notion that women are people. Not only until age 25, but their entire lives....and, yes, I believe it to be so.

О, да тут веселье!)

I understand, here we have some dissatisfaction with Donald Trump. Yes, perhaps he is abusing the anonymity, perhaps he was somewhat rude to you. I also believe that he should express openly own views about the buying of women for money and not foul in your blog hiding behind anonymity. But he is a successful man, we have respect his little ways.

Stupid trolls they don't even realize their thoughts are not really theirs, they are just slaves of this shared view on women, transmitters of stupidity impersonal.

Maybe it will change in Russia, maybe not? And it's not for me to decide, or fight for change there. It is not where I live, or have any desire to live. Maybe women like the current status of gender relations in the country. But I'm the master of my own blog, and will no longer tolerate what I consider to be misogynistic statements. :)

No, it will never change in Russia, and that's the scariest part. Of course women don't like that, but they're very experienced at self-suppressing and indulging this idiocy, so that in fact this all works as a mutual agreement, supported by both parties.

This one is ridiculous. If you believe women are worthless after a certain age, or their only value in life is to pop out babies, you're a misogynist. I don't even see how it's open for debate.

You're right. Btw, most female bloggers immediately ban anyone who says anything negative things about their appearance. I do not do this. For instance, I sometimes come across that blogger kiss_my_abs, where everyone praises her beauty in the endless, narcissistic pics she puts of herself in the blog. I always thought to myself - really? Everyone thinks she's perfect, there are no negative comments...then a reader told me he once wrote a slight criticism about her body, and was banned. :)) And it all became clear...:) Sadly, she is now a "travel" blogger and invited on travel press tours, even though her blog has absolutely nothing to do with this topic. :(

Something to think about - why do so many American women have breast implants? And those women are not celebrities or cancer survivors, just regular housewifes or soccer moms... Yes, there is less age discrimination in the States but... there must be a reason for that obsession with fake boobs... Just saying, not everything is black and white.

Date: 2016-04-25 07:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] peacetraveler22.livejournal.com
I don't see how fake boobs has any connection to this man's statements. Sure, there are superficial women all over the globe who place their core value and worth in appearance, and are pumping silicone in multiple places. And it is their right to do so. :) However, if you view ALL women of a certain age as "outdated" and worthless, you're a misogynist in my view. It does not matter if they are a flat-chested house maid, or a super model with silicone breasts. This was the message of this particular troll. There is no grey area for me, based on the culmination of his multiple messages sent to me over the past few days. I didn't publish them all, so perhaps the situation isn't so clear to outsiders.

From: [identity profile] margot-yyc.livejournal.com
No, no connection to the troll's statement.

I was talking about the notion that American women don't care about how they look or don't do anything to attract men. They do, and not just few shallow ones.

A wise decision, I think. Respect for holding so far, but now I think it just pointless. There is no need to let anonymous stupidity or troll agression appear in the journal. Plus, as you have said: more time, less dirt. There are plenty of registered users to have conversation with so let trolls stay outside somethere far far away in the galaxy.

tldr: good, thx)

I never understood why people write anonymously? It takes only a few minutes to create a LJ profile and username to leave comments..."tldr"...never seen this shorthand before. Had to google it to discern the meaning. :))

Wise of you :) I truly hope that eventually the Internet will become a regulated zone with no anonymity at all and same laws applied as real life has :)

I think there's a place for anonymity, for instance to protect the identity of whistle blowers. I'm typically against regulation of speech in any manner, and it would be impossible to have laws to implement such measures on the Internet as a whole. How would it work, and what type of punishment do you propose? :)) Who determines what violates moral codes or is "offensive"? These things are subjective. Probably we could sit and speak for hours about your visions of law in some future, more well-mannered society...:) But I decided to become Master of my own domain here in the blog - because nothing good can come from misogyny or sexism. And it's an area of social concern for me - like the fashionistas are for you. :))

On an unrelated note, do you know any type of freelance site in the .GE domain where I might be able to find a local to help with some type of virtual marketing pamphlet for my blog, for an economical price? I was contacted by the Georgian National Tourism Administration about possible cooperation for my journey in October. I need to submit data/statistics and more info about myself and the blog in some type of condensed and aesthetically pleasing format...there's a site in the .RU domain for these types of projects, where you can hire freelancers - www.fl.ru. If you know of something similar in your region, please send me the links. Many thanks! :)))

I just leave the comments un-screened when this happens (although I am sure you get a lot more comments). Somehow I felt that spending time to write a comment and never see it going un-screened is more frustrating for a troll than not getting to write a comment at all.

You're probably right - if the comment is never unscreened, it's more frustrating for the troll. However, such anonymous comments clog my inbox, and I already have a lot of messages/comments from readers to sort through. It takes a lot of time to respond to the messages, comments sometimes, but I think it's worth it. I don't like when bloggers ignore their readers all the time. It's somehow disrespectful in my view. :)
