Autumn in Virginia

IMG_1244

Autumn is the most magical season to me. In the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast it also offers the chance to view amazing foliage. In the DC area where I live the leaves are only starting to change. However, foliage currently is at its peak in New England states such as Maine and Vermont, considered the prime location in the U.S. to view the magnificent orange and red leaves of autumn. I tried to book a last minute trip to Vermont this weekend, but every bed and breakfast was full. So next year I'll plan ahead.

Many Northeners who move to other parts of the U.S., such as Florida or California, say the changing of the seasons is what they miss most. I cannot imagine living in a state where it's hot all the time because I'm miserable with hot temperatures.

In my state of Virginia there is a scenic route along the Shenandoah National Park called Skyline Drive. The route is packed with cars in autumn with various scenic points where drivers can easily pull over and admire the scenery of the colorful Blue Ridge Mountains. Leaves in this area are mostly green at this point but by the end of October the colors should come in full. I'll try to take the drive then and update with another post. Also, at the beginning of November I'll travel to Amish country in Pennsylvania for a long weekend. With its rolling hills and farms this should be a prime spot for viewing fall foliage.

A few trees in the Virginia woods already are bare but not many.

Many people suffer from seasonal affective disorder, more commonly known as "SAD", where depression and gloom set in at the end of autumn and through winter. But for me the cold is wonderful and I'm happiest during these seasons. In autumn for the beauty of nature and in winter for the honesty that comes with being stripped bare.

Thanks! I am leaving for this place today, to spend the holiday weekend with my family. We have a big recreational vehicle (RV) parked at this modest place in the woods. It's like a dacha - American style. :) Maybe I'll write a report about it.

That is very good thing (I meant RV) but in Russian we don't have infrastructure for it at all. I would happy to read about it.

Your autumn is very beautiful! Here in Russia we also have a colorful foliage in autumn, but alas it is not as bright as yours... As far as I know the further to the south you go the more colorful foliage you can see...
And I'm also fond of seasons when trees are bare and there is no snow yet (or already :))) That time we can admire beautiful sceneries that are hidden by leaves in summer or by snow in winter :))

The best autumn foliage is in the New England area of the States (Vermont, New Hampshire, etc.). I think I'll return to Russia in October but some people have told me it's very rainy this time of year. What do you think? Is it a good month to visit or no?

Well, I think this depends on the part of Russia you would like to visit. As for Saint-Petersburg - yes, it might be rainy here, but, you know, I think this city has its special beauty even (and especially) in rainy weather :))) By the way, do you know the Russian proverb "There is no bad weather, there is only inappropriate outfit". ("Нет плохой погоды, есть плохая одежда") As for me I like to go for a walk when it rains (slightly). But in the end of October, alas, it might even snows in Spb.
