Несъедобные обеды американских школьников

At my school, there was no cafeteria. Each morning, my mom awoke early and packed lunch for my sister and me. It grew monotonous, eating the same sandwiches and fruit each day. Secretly, I dreamed of being like my friends who went to public schools, lining up each day to have some old woman with a net around her hair throw slop on my plate. In the U.S., there's constant debate over what school children are fed in the cafeteria. A lot of schools have removed snack and soda machines, and guidelines about nutritional values for school meals are always shifting. Over the weekend, I looked at the menu from my nephew's elementary school, listing the meal choices for each day in the month of May. Common choices include pizza, tacos, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken nuggets and pastas, all served with some type of vegetable and potatoes or rice. There's always one healthy option like grilled chicken or fish, and a wide-variety of fresh fruit is available for purchase. Yet only the most disciplined of children would pick such options when there are tastier and more indulgent choices placed in front of them each day. All of this creates a very sad picture on the white tray. I grew curious, and began to read about school lunches around the globe, and here's what I discovered!

Look at the culinary delights thrown on these plates from Brazil, Greece and France. The Greek dish looks especially appetizing to me, while the plate from Ukraine has the same sad and pathetic appearance as the USA lunch, filled with greasy sausages, potatoes, cabbage, borscht and a pancake.


If the topic is of interest to readers, I can take my camera and join my nephew for lunch one day to explain more about what school kids in the USA eat. Of course, many parents still pack lunches for their children, so they aren't forced to eat this cafeteria slop each day. However, I think there's some level of excitement for most young kids to go through the cafeteria line each day, pick from a choice of foods, and create their own meals. It's a rite of passage for almost all American school children.

What did you eat during your school days? Cafeteria food, or homemade lunches? I have no idea what Russian children are served in cafeterias or dining halls, because I've never once visited a school there. Has it changed a lot from the Soviet era? What happens if the family has no money to pay for a child's lunch, does the Russian government subsidize it?

Вообще нет. Не любили столовку многие зажравшиеся дети. У которых по турам была копчёная колбаса и бананы)). Остальным было зашибись. А эти 15 % - да, воротили нос). Сейчас их легко вычленить из толпы по отчаянному "Пармезану!!"

I studied at school during 90's. It was one of the best schools in the city of Perm (specialized math school). My mom didn't have money to pay for lunches (I was a child from low income family), so she packed lunch for me every day. It wasn't subsidized from the government - you could either pay or refuse. Anyway I didn't like those lunches, that consisted mostly of mashed potatoes or pasta, badly fried fish or minced meat "kotleta", borsh and tea or kompot. Anyway I had small pocket money during my high school days and I could spend them on pastry in school café. It was relatively cheap: for less than a dollar you could get tea and cookies.

:) Ой, не вибачайтеся, я розумію. Ця техніка... :)
Дякую за підказку, що то за їжа в американському обіді. )) Фрукти в сиропі можливо більш солодкі ніж наш звичний компот, а в барбекю додають рідкий дим або щось подібне. Це все різні традиції.
До речі, я також навчалася ще за часів радянського союзу, і мої спогади про їжу в їдальні більш-менш приємні. :) Дещо мені подобалося настільки, що тепер я відшукую ті старі рецепти і готую по них вдома. :)
Ще окремо додам і про садочки. У звичайному державному садку, куди ходив мій син, також готували дуже смачно. Кожного дня ми приходили до садочку і відчували смачні аромати. Жодного разу я не відчула якогось горілого запаху. В садочку навіть готували фаршировані перці і голубці, і були категорично проти сосисок :) Менше дітей, звичайно, ніж у школі, тому їх встигали швиденько накрутити. Пишу, а самій аж їсти заготілося. :) Коли син випускався з садочку, то навіть попросив у директорки кілька рецептів. :)) Нам не відмовили. )) Все залежить від керівника навчального закладу.

Вот и я о том же - человеку в детстве просто не повезло. Да, не везде было одинаково хорошо, но в большинстве школ - хорошо, вкусно и качественно. Я и училась в таких, и работала, и сейчас могу сравнить с французскими.

This photo looks like a real common lunch at Russian/Ukrainian schools. There's usually a first course (soup), a second (kasha and/or salad often with some meat or fish), a dessert (something sweet, but it's not necessary) and a drink (compote, juice, tea), bread can be taken by students if they wish.

В российских школьных столовых отвратительная еда, кроме выпечки. Особенно она была ужасной когда я учился с 1998 по 2006 год. Нормальная еда может быть только если там готовят повара из частной фирмы, а не бюджетной. Совсем недавно по городскому информационному каналу был репортаж про школьные столовые и различные махинации с ними, так в одной школе нашли 11 нарушений при готовке пищи

Hello :) I graduated from school in 2006 year. For 10 years of studying there i've never ate at cafeteria. It was the same bad looking food as 20 years ago and as 30 years ago (cabbage salad,poor soup,mash potato, cutlets). But i loved baking. It was the only thing which i ate there. I prefered to eat at home.

Все что представлено на фото это в нашем понимании не обед, а перекус. Обед обязательно включает в себя суп, а его трудно завернуть с собой из дома. Мои дети с удовольствием обедают в школе. Меню включает суп, второе с гарниром, какой то фрукт и напиток. Я бы не смогла им обеспечить такое питание "с собой". Неужели американский школьники так мало проводят времени в школе, что обходятся без горячего питания?

Так, я згодна. Я теж просила рецепти деяких страв зi шкiльноi iдальнi, та зараз шукаю рецепти с дитинства (я теж люблю готувати). Все залежить вiд адмiнiстрацii та робiтникiв столовоi, зокрема, тух господинь, хто готуэ для дiтей.
Але ще велике значення маэ й фiнансова сторона (якi кошти вуделенi на дитяче харчування та як вони застосованi) i те, як батьки виховали культуру iжi в дитини. Ой, я мабудь все в купу згорнула. Але... я бачила випадки, коли дiту не iли користне i тому администрацiя переходула на бiльш "популярну " iжу.

Ирино (я теж Ира :) ), як я знаю, фрукти в сиропi i компот майже однаково солодкi. :) А барнекю соус э разний... Але ви кажете вiрно. Це лише рiзни традицii та культура харчування.

П.с. наша з вами ромова привела мене до iдеi проготувату такий-собi украiнсько-американьський фьюжен. :))))

As for me, the school hours were from 8.00 to 12.00 or, the maximum till 13.00, so I ate nothing at school.
You have to understand that in Russian schools there are from 4 to 6 lessons by 40 minutes and no big breaks between lessons (5-10 minute break), so at the "easy days" schoolchild is free at 11.20, average day at 12.10 and a busy day at 13.00. (Starting at 8 am) And it is easy to survive this couple of hours without eating at school.
2 times a week we had lunch at the school's cafeteria.
Mostly it was a bun with cinnamon, which I really liked, sometimes a bun with cheese and very rare a delicious bun with lemon. Sometimes it was bun with raisins (which I detest) or bad prepared chicken, which was very unpopular among the students. This was combined with insipid tea. It was fully for the state's account, and it was hungry 90's, so I think it was acceptable at that time.

As I know now that school has an everyday meal, with soup, second course and juice. (And the parents have to subsidize these meals paying about 20-30 USD per month). But I am still sure that a child can live without a meal for 4 or 5 hours. The most gluttonous may get along with an apple.

Нам давали запеканку на завтрак (я её зову "запиханка" - ибо запихивать в себя приходилось эту гадость), кофе/чай. Кашу манную тоже часто давали. На обед суп и на второе гречку с сосиской или котлету. Точно уж не вспомню. 199х годы, Москва.

Школьникый день с первого класса в США примерно длится до 3х часов дня. Начинается школьный день около 8 утра (обычно в 7:30). И да, обед в виде первого, второго и компота, принят далеко не везде. Во многих культурах суп едят вечером. Но, при этом, в США ребенку в школу или детский сад вполне реально давать суп. Есть специальные термосочки для этого, да и если что, то ребенку все, что надо разогреют (по крайней мере в детском саду это было). Ну а так... считайте "второе" с гарниром (причем с обязательными овощами как второй гарнир) и фрукт с напитком в америкснком детском школьном ланче есть. И да, все, что надо-горячее. ;)

Ещё. В сморщенные потемневшие котлеты добавляли чеснок. Чтобы скрыть вонь несвежего мяса.
Самое вкусное было что-нибудь кондитерское. Язычки по 7-8 копеек. Коржик за 10 копеек. С чаем.
Это как в армии. Самое гурмэ - кружка сладкого чая с куском хлеба с маслом. По выходным ещё яйца. Остальное - помои.

At school where my grandson studies, very tasty and cheap lunches. We pay lunches for the week ahead, if the child wants to buy food in addition, we give him money for this purpose.
Children from poor families receive free lunches.
Normal lunch: soup, meat cutlets with a garnish, fruit juice, pies.
Behind quality of food in school cafeterias there is very rigid monitoring, it isn't allowed any products of fast food.

The most terrible memories about USSR - school cafeterias and city diners. Real slops, animal foods. No wonder lot of children suffered from gastro and bowel illnesses.
