All natural landscapes evoke different emotions, and the mountains are my absolute favorite. I envision them as nature's hug, for the sea is equally as beautiful but more fluid and turbulent. Mountains for the most part sit peacefully, blanketing you with their presence from the road, air or foot. In their midst, I feel completely relaxed and simultaneously invigorated. A reminder that anything is possible, but the trek will often be filled with bumps and seemingly insurmountable challenges. What matters most is that we rise above them and somehow prevail for the better. Standing at the top of the mid-Pyrenees in Southern France, you momentarily feel like you're on top of the world. It's a special place known as Pic du Midi, best known for its famous astronomical observatory. I visited this region in late October, and will share a few mobile pics today and tell you a little about it.Read more... )

After the tragic attacks in Paris last week, there was an outpouring of grief on social media. Immediately profile pictures on Facebook were changed to display the French flag in a symbol of solidarity and support for Parisians. Of course, this outraged many people on RuNet. I watched closely the outpouring of yellow headlines and anger that flowed over the weekend. So many nasty and angry posts questioning why foreigners didn't display the Russian flag on social media after the Sinai plane bombing. What about Beirut? How about Turkey! Both countries also were victims of terrorist attacks in the last few weeks, though on a much smaller scale. Even more outrage when LiveJournal displayed the French flag on the homepage for several days. As a foreigner and tourist to both France and Russia many times, the reasons for the disparate public reactions are quite obvious to me.Read more... )

Christmas-Market-26677148

Yesterday, I booked tickets for a short holiday trip to France to visit one of my best friends living in Bon-Encontre. This is a small, rural town located in Southwestern France. The trip will be very short, from 4 December - 8 December and the plan is to visit the countryside of Bon-Encontre and take a day trip to Bordeaux to visit the Christmas Market and city. The main thing - to spend time with a dear friend I haven't seen in person for over three years. The last time we met was in Kyiv, when I visited him during the summer of 2011.

Already, America is gearing up for the holidays. Soon, we'll celebrate our annual Thanksgiving feast and turkeys and other festive foods have already arrived in the grocery stores. Smells of cinnamon, cakes, cookies and pine trees will soon follow. During the last week of the year, I'll probably take a week long journey somewhere in the U.S. Which State are you most interested in reading about? Let me know.

Do I have any readers living in the Bordeaux area? What is interesting to see there? Not castles, because I have seen so many in my lifetime! Where will you celebrate the New Years' holiday? In Russia, or abroad? I'm always so jealous of the long period of vacation Russians get during this time!
