Russia No. 1 in Anti-Americanism?

Today The Moscow Times published an interesting article entitled Why Russia Is No. 1 in Anti-Americanism. The article summarizes the results of a recent Gallup International poll where approximately 70,000 residents in 65 countries were asked "Who is the greatest threat to world peace?" 24% of worldwide respondents answered "America", but Russia exceeded the global response by more than double, with 54% of Russians choosing America.

Conversely, only 2% of Americans in the Gallup poll think Russia is a threat to global peace. I've mentioned before that Russia doesn't dominate American news, nor do most Americans spend any time thinking about the country at all. A rare exception recently due to the Olympic Games being held in the country. I don't know how powerful state controlled propaganda is in Russia because my knowledge of the language isn't proficient enough to watch these broadcasts. Honestly, a lot of faith and reliance should not be placed on such polls because they are always skewed in some manner. Russian bloggers like fritzmorgen, a master at statistics and anti-Western data, could probably search the Internet and find polls which say the opposite - that Americans don't trust Russia, etc. The article also indicates that another Gallup poll asked Russians the following question: "If there were no barriers to living in any country in the world, which country would you live in?" The number one answer amongst Russians? "America." Thus, the two polls seem diametrically opposed.

Absolutely, a lot of Americans don't agree with the nation's foreign policy. There are serious issues to tackle at home, and the belief among many is that our resources should be dedicated here not abroad. And you help Oleg find all these crazy articles and videos from America? :))

I don't read it. I saw this article posted on Michael McFaul's Facebook page, and that's how I found it. Mostly I read Lenta.ru or Echo of Moscow. The latter because they published one of my posts. :)

America became the world's only "cop", for better or for worse. So, naturally, people don't like cops, because they tend to show up and issue tickets. But - whom do people call when there is trouble? Right - the cops. So, there is no contradiction in the poll results.

The author think about this opinion as a result of anti-american campaign. Yes, there's some anti-amercanism inspirated by Kremlin (I would say, almost all of it is nothing more than words). But if some of viewpoints of Russian citizens are stupid (and I think some of them are), does it mean, that it has not been generated by something real? I don't think so. After all, "24 percent of respondents worldwide" had not been propagandized by Kremlin. :) And I don't think, that respondents in the first and second poll were the same, so I don't see something strange in this result.

Yes, different respondents in the polls. And, it's no surprise 1/4 of respondents answered America. We're the bully of the world, in both good and bad ways.

Putin's anti-Americanism comes from his believes that America is the only real threat to his way of power, the way he, and his apparent followers, will control the power in Russia and safeguard his personal future once or if he retires. This is the future of a person who did so much harm and damage to Russian people, to its moral benchmarks and the country itself. He turned Russia's moral standards to the once of people of cage ages where they are in fight all the time and consider everything around them hostile to them. He truly believes that honesty, integrity and people's power are irrelevant and unnecessary matter of politics; he thinks that American or in general West politicians who believes in those values are either idiots or hypocritical just like himself. Also he has so much ambitious and is full of impudence to think that he can spread his type of values around the world.

Once again we can see Russia is the country populated with the people who fails to use their own brains, who hates the freedom and civil rights . They, russians, prefer to rely on their government advices and orders much more than on the rule of law and human dignity. I'm utterly disgusted how russians treat their neighbors ukranians who tried to relieve themselves from oppression of the thievish power the clique of president Yanukovich.

Well, some Russians use their brains but not all. Same as in America. :) The rule of law definitely is not as well respected there as in America, but some people think this is a good thing. Why? Because it makes Russia the most free society in the world. You can do whatever you wish, with little consequence for your actions.

BTW I remember that there was a period when Russians were very positive towards America.
It's was just after Gorbachev and Reagan ended the Cold War.
Everybody were tired of this war.

But then more and more evidence started to emerge that America thinks that they sort of have won that war (not just peacefully ended it by mutual agreement).
When Clinton attacked Yugoslavia to cover his affairs with Monica the attidude in Russia radically changed.

Have you try to compare comments in US and Russian web-sites? I did - with UK sources. The difference is terrific. They pour out their hatred even in case of somebody's death. So no wonder that US is kind of valve where they can pour out hatred and jealousy (most of them would be happy to move to US). It's a result of recent situation and policy in the country, heavy Gebbels-style propaganda.

Oh, yes! The Russian blogosphere is an entirely different beast compared to American forums. :) This I quickly learned after my first successful post here, which became infected with Anti-American trolls. The ability to use tact and respectfully disagree with others is sometimes absent in Russian forums. However, for the most part my readers behave. :)

I would probably partially disappoint American journalists since I believe that the greatest threat to world peace as of now is radical Islamic groups.

But America is easily the second greatest threat, because I can't miss the fact that America is quick at defining someone an enemy and solving the problem with this enemy by military force. Sometimes it looks like scenes from movies about superheros: you always know that Americans are good guys, and somewhere in the world there are good guys who need support, and bad guys who need to be eliminated. Reality is different, but who cares about the reality in the world of motion pictures? To my relief, Obama understands reality a lot better than a stereotypical McCain and is not so happy to send troops and air carriers to assist "good guys" against "bad guys".

But there is still a risk of having another McCain who didn't have enough military games when he was young. That's why the threat exists.

And yet, if I had to choose between America ruling the world and Saudi Arabia ruling the world, I would support America with no doubt.

Really, I agree with you on all points. These Islamic extremists pose threats everywhere, and undeservedly cast doubt and shame on an entire religion. McCain - I think he is Putin's biggest critic! Maybe McCain's mom should have bought him more G.I. Joe dolls or toy soldiers when he was a child. :) He will never be President of America. He is too old and his views on some topics too antiquated and radical. Moving forward, I think Americans will continue to elect middle-ground leaders.

In this article there are more numbers, and as we can see, there are many other countries who see US as great threat. Suprisingly Greece has 45%. So I think propoganda in Russia gives probably about 10% from 53%.
I'm not anti-American but I also think that US is main threat. Other countries can invade just neighbours, US can invade in any not enough strong country across the globe. Also we can see a number of wars involving USA in recent years.

Why so high in Greece, I'm not sure? America is not loved for its foreign policy, there's no doubt about it and it's mostly deserved. But I would not consider my country the biggest threat to world peace. We're also the first to rescue and provide for others in many cases of humanitarian relief throughout the globe. Charitable nation in many ways.

America is a great place to live as government takes care about american people(internal). There are some weak points like medical insurance system but there is no ideal country in the world.

The wars that US starts is the reason of suffering of people in other countries. Its outside US boarders (external). Propaganda? Ask Serbians.

Polls don't tell everything. A few things to consider. Who wrote the polls? How were the polls written? Who answered those polls? Who is the target audience? Where are these polls being found?

They are all skewed somehow, as I said in the post. Also, the forum in which they are published is selective, so liberal media publishes poll results reflecting the attitude of their readers and conservative media publishes polls favorable to this ideology. I'm extremely liberal on social issues, yet still sometimes watch Fox News just to hear the other viewpoint. Good to consider both sides. :)

I have no negative feelings toward the US, but have a claim. Once the United States were an example, a model for the rest of the world. People have an example to follow to make life better in their own countries. Now it is obvious that humanity can not indefinitely consume, society must change and we need to preserve the planet for future generations. The world needs a leader, but there is no leader:(
