On 17 February 1973, a young woman named Judy entered a hospital in Manassas, Virginia and gave birth to me. She was only twenty years old at the time, and so many years have passed since then. I can hardly believe that I'm now 42! Each time I look at the year of my birth I'm in shock. :)) How can it be, when I still feel like a twenty year old at heart, and in spirit?

The past two years, I celebrated my birthday in Moscow, but this year I'll be warm and cozy in my apartment, looking at the white snow falling from the window. Mother nature delivered a snow storm to the Washington, DC area on my special day, and subzero temps for the past week. I guess it's good for a winter baby like me, to welcome a new year of life with snowflakes and my favorite temperatures. We can never know what life will bring us each year; however, there's always a certainty there will be ups and downs. Joys and sorrows. And I hope many adventures!

Hello 42...let's have some fun! :)

Russia - see you next week! I arrive on 24 February, and the first big journey of the year begins!

Let me respectfully disagree.
I use to live in Russia for many years.
And I have a right to say that Russia is a pretty shitty country, with a lot of ignorant aggressive people.
Yes, St.Peterbourg looks nice from the window of a coach bus.
But if, Gog forbid, you find yourself in trouble there outside of the tourist area, do not expect anything good.
I am not trying to scare you, I am just informing you in advance.
When you in Russia, be aware of your surroundings.

This is my fourth visit to the country, so I know what to expect. I already wrote a lot of negative impressions about Russia during my prior travels. You can read my old reports. :) But also good things. When I'm there, I travel with a Russian most of the time, and we are not riding or visiting tourist areas. I already posted the route we'll drive on the road trip next week. You can look at the updated route in my travel companion's blog - http://macos.livejournal.com/1002114.html

By the way, your companion knows nothing and realize nothing about even places where he live.
He dont know anything even about Moscow.
His reports about visited places - just banches of standard photos with silly comments.

I have my own eyes and mind! And can think and see for myself. :)

Nope, you can't. Because its not matter of eyes or thinking. Its matter of language.

You cant read in russian - all that absurd your patrner wrote in blog.

For example, he claims that Russia has not many historic bildings - less than USA has.
Absolute ignorance!

I can easily read through Google translate. I'm reading a lot of Russian bloggers here on LJ, know the Cyrillic alphabet, and can read basic Russian words. I studied the language for six months.

To see mistakes and misconceptions one should have advanced knowledge in language, culture, history.
Google translator and basic words are not enough.

For example, your Macos wrote about Bogolubovo (near Vladimir - its pretty close to your current trip?):

Боголюбово - ужаснейшая дыра, находящаяся в нескольких километрах от города Владимира. Интересно это местечко лишь церковью Покрова на Нерли, который некоторые (http://www.pravmir.ru/article_2360.html) называют "самым совершенным храмом на Руси". Осмотр достопримечательностей Боголюбово занял у меня полчаса. (http://macos.livejournal.com/tag/%D0%91%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%BE%D0%BB%D1%8E%D0%B1%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BE)

Its all, all his complete impressions about place. Only Pokrov church is interesting for him.

That is, he knows nothing about very important/interesting bilding:

Image

Prince Andrey Bogolubskiy, founder of Russia, was killed there, in ancient tower.
Then, there is no so ancient civil building in Russia anymore. Its wonder, that thing is standing till nowdays. And there is long story. Not interesting, huhh??

Absolute ignorance!
Thats your tour guide..you will get just idiotic claims and lies from him. And you'll never recognize it.

In general, it really pisses me off when people critique my travel companion, as if I have no brain and can't think for myself. By age 42, I've learned how to do this quite well. :)

Because its not english, its russian, translated literally into english. I just replace words.
