Will I Survive?

I now sit at my desk completely distracted and worried. On the day I left Maine last week, I awoke with a huge red bump on a certain part of my body. At first, I thought it was a bug bite or evil pimple. But this mass has continued to grow in the last five days, and the irritation and pain level also has risen. The redness has spread and it's clear something has amassed under my skin. It feels like a round, hard rock and is sensitive to the touch. It doesn't itch, but sharp nerve pains occasionally spread down my arm. It seems recently that I can't have a successful vacation without some medical consequence. Remember last year when I came back from Palestine and had a mysterious illness and skin rash? I suspected that it was from hugging and touching so many dirty children in the remote villages I visited. Doctors never determined what the bumps were, but they eventually faded over time. What do you think this current mysterious bump is? Will I survive? :)) I know everyone loves to run and provide advice and opinions on RuNet. Help me! :)

He will just refer me to another specialist. But I'm not sure what type of doctor to see for this? Maybe a dermatologist?

I will Olga! I showed the bump to my colleagues today, and they all felt it and told me to immediately go to the doctor. They scared me, and I will now go and make sure it's not something serious. Thanks for your concern. :)

Shannon, if I were you I'd either go to an urgent care (since if you go to an ER you'll probably end up spending half a day waiting - in their opinion it's not a true emergency) or maybe if you have a friend who is a doctor just send him/her the picture to get an advice. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

I never go the ER anymore. There's a good urgent care place by my house, and it's much cheaper than an ER visit. I think it will be fine. Probably it is just some skin irritation. I have very sensitive skin. :( It has been this way since I was a child. I couldn't even wear normal diapers. My mom had to use cloth ones and continually wash them.

Very best thing for all those unknown bumps is Russian old-fashion "Vishnevsky liniment" (Мазь Вишневского). It is made from tar and smells like hell, but always helps. This stuff saved so many lives during WW2. I still have it in my medicine cabinet and use sometimes

Levomycetin will save your skin. The alcohol solution is the best (don't drink it though!) but it may be any other form (a cream or a gel or smth.). Can you in the USA buy such simple medical substances?

We can buy some topical treatments and gels/ointments over the counter. For instance, "Neosporin" http://www.neosporin.com/. I've never heard of "levomycetin." Very strong ointments usually require a prescription.

Urgent care as a first step or try getting appointment to skin clinic, the one that have it sooner, any doc there will do, your insurance site will give you a list from the network.

Good suggestion. I almost always go to urgent care facilities first. The ones in my area are good, and the doctors are very thorough.

Looks like an insect byte that introduced some infection. Most likely the doctor will prescribe some topical antibiotics. Were you in the woods in Maine? Did you scratch this area?

Yes, I was in the woods in Maine and also almost every weekend in summer time in Virginia. So, it could be a bite. I'm waiting for the doctor to get back to me.

Spiritus aethylicus medicinalis (95%) is the best litmus-cure for such effects on the skin: just apply it gently to the bump approximately each 2 hours, if in 1-2 days it's not gone or smaller, than consulting doctor will be the best solution. Not for the case, just for future knowledge :)

I don't know about any of this medicines my Russian readers mention. :) In the U.S., we need to have prescriptions for a lot of ointments, antibiotics, etc. It's different than in Russia.

Just to find an excuse to recommend different from going to see a doctor, i'd say wait another week. Might be just poison from a bite. If it doesen't start to fade away then, well, go see the doctor.

I've had a bite like this early this summer. Was also growing and hardening for over a week, and then it just vanished.
